Window Treatments 101: Are Drapes Really in Style?

Short answer: YES! Especially if you’re not into super-ultra-stark-modern design…which if you’re reading my blog, is likely the case.

The draperies of today definitely don’t look like the giant balloon swags of the 80’s or the lacy country curtains of the 60’s. Honestly, though, most drapery panel styles are pretty darn timeless – it’s really more that fabric tastes change as trends change. But of course, if you’re after a collected, timeless look, it shouldn’t matter if the fabric you select is “trendy!”

Fun, timeless prints – and of course solids – can outlast any trend.

Solid orange panels create a beautiful contrast to the blue walls. What decade is this from? It’s not obvious, since the colors aren’t super trendy.

Panels don’t have to be plain, if you don’t want them to be. Draperies can be one of the biggest stars of the room!

I appreciate that you explained how drapes are as attractive in modern settings. Every morning, the sun enters our living room, causing us discomfort since, in addition to harming our skin and irritating our eyes, it also does so when we are sitting on the couch. To protect us whenever the sun enters the room, I intend to get custom drapes. Thanks for the ideas!

    Hi Lindsey.
I am trying to replace some very old draperies for a double-window in dining room and a triple-window (box/bay window) in living room.
I want to use the existing moveable hardware and Do Not want to change over to the rod system. The existing hardware uses to pulley-type ropes on one end to open/close the draperies and sheers.
Is there a “name” for this type of drapery? Is it still available anywhere?
Please help me learn how to replace these “very old” draperies and sheers.
    Thank you

Great read! I love how you break down why drapes still have a place in modern homes—there’s something timeless about softening a room with fabric rather than going full minimalist. Your point about personal style over trends really resonates.

I’ve been experimenting with visualizing different window treatment ideas before committing, and stumbled across a tool that’s surprisingly helpful for mocking up styles. It’s an AI image gallery where you can explore interior design concepts quickly—higgsfield.pro if you’re curious.

Do you usually sketch out ideas first, or just trust your gut when planning a room?

Love this take on drapes making a comeback! I’ve been playing with layered window treatments in my own space, and there’s something so warm about fabric that blinds just can’t replicate.

I’ve actually been using an AI image prompt gallery lately to visualize different curtain styles and color combinations before committing—super helpful for seeing how textures work with natural light. Has anyone else tried using AI tools for interior design planning, or do you stick to traditional mood boards?

Great points about drapes making a comeback! I’ve been experimenting with softer, more layered looks in my own space, and it’s amazing how fabric can completely shift the mood of a room. Your tip about ceiling height is spot-on—I’ve seen that trick work wonders in smaller spaces.

On a related note, I’ve been using higgsfield.pro to visualize different curtain styles and color palettes before committing. Their AI image gallery helps me see how various textures would actually look in my space rather than just guessing. Has anyone else here tried using visual tools to plan out window treatments, or do you prefer the old-school fabric swatch route?

Love this take on drapes making a comeback! I’ve been leaning into warmer, more layered interiors lately, and floor-to-ceiling curtains really do transform a space. Your point about them softening modern architecture resonates—I’ve seen the same effect in some AI-generated mood boards I’ve been experimenting with for my own home. Speaking of which, I’ve been using higgsfield.pro to visualize different fabric textures and color palettes before committing to anything. It’s surprisingly helpful for seeing how window treatments interact with natural light throughout the day. Have you tried using any visual tools to plan out your drapery projects, or do you stick to fabric swatches?
