The market in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is one of the most charming and vibrant in the region. Held every Wednesday morning in the heart of this picturesque town, the market spreads throughout the narrow streets and squares, offering a lively atmosphere full of colors, scents, and tastes typical of Provence. The inspiration here was AMAZING!
What did we find at the Saint-Rémy-de-Provence market?
Handcrafted Goods Local artisans sell handmade soaps (often olive oil and lavender-based), textiles (hand towels and table cloths are favorites of mine), pottery, and traditional Provencal fabrics and linens. The colors and patterns are so inspiring! It’s fun to introduce a traditional French pattern into most any design.
Cheeses and Cured Meats There’s always a great variety of French cheeses, particularly those from the Provence region, as well as sausages and charcuterie. At the onset this might not seem like something that could inspire a designer, but let’s take a closer look. See the intricate mix of red, pink and white in the sausage? That’s a great unexpected color palette against the brown backdrop. Brown is coming back with a vengeance right now!
Olives and Olive Oil Saint-Rémy is surrounded by olive groves, so there’s always tons of excellent local olive oils and marinated olives. The olives are always one of the prettiest items at market. I love how the different tones of green, gray, and black mix together. The sheen of the olives is also inspiring – mix more matte items with a little shine to create a livlier, more interesting design.
Nuts, Herbs and Spices The market offers tons of dried spices including lavender, herbes de Provence, and curries in an array of vibrant colors. We love how the bright orange of the dried curries mixes with the purples in the lavender. It’s an unexpected yet gorgeous color combination!
Clothing and Accessories A selection of clothing stalls offer chic French and Italian clothing and hats suited to the Mediterranean climate. Lindsey may have picked up an item or two!
Flowers & Plants Bouquets of fresh flowers, often featuring sunflowers, lavender, and other regional blooms, offer amazing scents and beautiful texture. Flowers really can complete a room!
Original Artwork There is some amazing artwork hiding among the other stalls. The artists are all local and love sharing their passion with the market patrons.
Beautiful Shops There are so many gorgeous shops surrounding the market. The market only lasts until 1pm, but the stores are open well into the early evening.
The market also offers a lovely opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of a traditional Provencal town, with its beautiful old buildings, cafes, and relaxed pace. We absolutely love to explore, shop, and enjoy the flavors of the region.
